SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect to your financial account through MSN Money or through Microsoft Money, the password that you typically use to access your account through your financial institution's Web site does not work.

CAUSE

Many financial institutions use two types of passwords. One password is for the users to access the information through the financial institution's Web site, and the other password is for users who use finance programs, such as MSN Money and Microsoft Money.

RESOLUTION

To obtain the correct logon information to connect to your bank through the products listed at the beginning of this article, contact your bank directly.

MORE INFORMATION

Many financial institutions offer multiple ways to access your accounts online. There are two basic ways to access your accounts. One way is to access your account online through the World Wide Web (Web). The other way is to access your accounts online through a direct link to your bank.

The most common method to access your accounts is online through the Web. You connect to the Web site of your financial institution, and then use your 5-8 digit password to sign in directly on the Web site.

To access your financial institution's Web site through Microsoft Money, click the Connect to Bank option in the left pane, and then connect to the Web site. Click the signin button to obtain access. You can take advantage of any options available there, and then directly download that activity into Money.

The direct link method to access your account is called "OFX". It is offered by many financial institutiosn for a fee. You use a direct link in a way that is similar to how you access the Internet through the Web. In this case, however, you use the Get Online Statements feature in Money. This feature requires another password. Contact online support for your financial institituion to discuss this feature or to activate it. Your financial institution will supply you with a password that you can enter into the appropriate line in the Get Online Statements feature of Money.

Your financial institution sets up the direct link feature. To work correctly, Money does not require the direct link feature, and Money does not control the direct link feature.
