XADM: You Cannot Modify Properties of Exchange Server Resources in a Windows 2000 Cluster Environment (326012)

SYMPTOMS

If you modify the properties of a resource in Exchange Server, and then click Apply, you may receive the following error message:
An error occurred attempting to save parameters to the cluster database. The data is invalid error id: 13(0000000D).

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the last two bytes of the value string in the resource's Description registry key are not 0 (zero).

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type regedt32, and then press ENTER.
  3. Locate and then double-click the following registry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Cluster\Resources

  4. Locate and then click the globally unique identifier (GUID) for the resource that you cannot modify. The GUID is a 32-character value that uses the following format: xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx. The GUID has the same Name value as the resource.
  5. Click the Description key, and then click the value in the right pane.
  6. On the View menu, click Display Binary Data.
  7. If the last two bytes are not 0 (that is "0000"), double-click the Description key.
  8. In the String Editor dialog box, click OK.

    This writes the end-of-string marker so that the value now ends with "0000".
  9. Repeat steps 1 through 8 for every resource that you cannot modify.
  10. Close Registry Editor.
