PIP2001: Error Message: A Required DLL File C:\Windows\System\Oleaut32.dll Was Not Found (326004)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start any of the programs listed at the beginning of this article, you receive the following an error message:

A required dll file C:\Windows\System\oleaut32.dll was not found

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the Oleaut32.dll file is missing or damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, extract the Oleaut32.dll file from your Windows installation CD-ROM. To do this, use the appropriate method for your operating system.

Microsoft Windows XP and Microsoft Windows 2000

Use the Windows File Checker utility to detect and replace damaged Windows system files. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Windows installation CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and then hold down the SHIFT key as the CD-ROM loads, to turn off Autoplay.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type SFC /scannow, and then click OK.

Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

Extract and replace the damaged file. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Start your computer in Safe mode. To do this, restart your computer. Press and hold down the F8 key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then select Safe Mode on the Startup menu.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type: msconfig, and then click OK.
  4. In the Windows File Checker Utility window, click Extract File.
  5. In the Extract one file from installation disk dialog box, type oleaut32.dll, and then click Start.
  6. In the Restore from box, type drive:\Windows\Options\InstallNOTE: Use c:\windows\options\install if you installed a Windows Millennium Edition retail product, or C:\windows\options\cabs if your computer manufacturer installed Windows Millennium Edition.

  7. In the Save file in box, type C:\Windows\Desktop.
  8. Click OK to extract the file.
  9. Drag the extracted file from your desktop to the C:\Windows\System folder, and then click Yes to overwrite the file.
  10. Restart your computer. If you extract a file directly to the destination folder to replace a file that is protected by the Windows File Checker utility, you may receive the following error message:
    Extract File
    The specified file is protected and may not be copied or deleted.

Microsoft Windows 98

  1. Insert your Windows installation CD-ROM into your computer's CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive, and hold the SHIFT key on your keyboard as the CD-ROM loads, to turn off Autoplay.
  2. Click Start, and then click Run.
  3. In the Run dialog box, type SFC, and then click OK.
