RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented.
Method 1: Disable Pointer Trails
NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Mouse.
- On the Motion or Pointer Options tab, click to clear the Show pointer trails or Display pointer trails check box, and then click OK.
If the issue continues to occur, continue to the next method.
Method 2: Install Train Simulator Update
An update has been created to resolve issues with several video cards. To
download and install the update, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Method 3: Use the Microsoft Train Simulator Troubleshooter
You can use the Train Simulator Troubleshooter to customize the startup process to help resolve certain problems that you may encounter when you try to start or play the game.
To use the Train Simulator Troubleshooter:
- Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft Games, point to Train Simulator, and then click Train Simulator Troubleshooter.
- Click Troubleshooting.
- Click to select all of the check boxes.
- Click OK.
- Click Play Train Simulator.
If the issue continues to occur, continue to the next method.
Method 4: Change Pointer Scheme to Windows Standard or Default
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Mouse.
- Click the Pointer Options tab.
- In the Scheme box, click Windows Standard or Windows Default, and then click OK.
If the issue continues to occur, continue to the next method.
Method 5: Install an Updated Video Driver
A driver is software that your operating system uses to communicate with a piece of hardware that is installed in your computer. Most video adapter manufacturers release updated versions of their video drivers on a regular basis.
An updated driver for your video adapter can increase the performance,
efficiency, and stability of the features of your video adapter.
To identify the manufacturer and the model of your video adapter:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System.
- If you are using a Microsoft Windows 95- or a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer, click the Device Manager tab.
If you are using a Microsoft Windows 2000- or a Microsoft Windows XP-based
computer, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager. - Expand Display adapters.
- Under the Display adapters branch, note the manufacturer and the model of your video adapter, and then click OK.
- Close all of the open windows on the desktop.
Contact your computer or video card manufacturer to download and install the latest video drivers. See the "More Information" section of this article for information about how to contact your computer or video card manufacturer.

Method 6: Install the Latest Version of Microsoft DirectX

Method 7: Clean Boot the Computer
When you start Windows normally, there are a number of programs that start automatically and run in the background. These programs, which may include antivirus and system utility programs, may sometimes interfere with the game.
When you perform a clean boot before you start the game, you prevent these programs from starting automatically. To perform a clean boot, follow the steps appropriate for your version of Microsoft Windows.
Microsoft Windows XP
NOTE: You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group in to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.
- Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
- On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Process SYSTEM.INI File, Process WIN.INI File, and Load Startup Items check boxes. You cannot clear the Use Original BOOT.INI check box.
- On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
- Click OK, and then click Restart to restart your computer.
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
- Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
- On the General tab, click Selective startup.
- Click to clear all of the check boxes under Selective startup except System.ini and Static Vxd.
- On the Startup tab, click to select the *StateMgr check box.
- Click OK. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
IMPORTANT: Look closely at the General tab to make sure that the check boxes you cleared are still cleared.
Microsoft Windows 98
- Click Start, point to Run, type msconfig, and then click OK.
- On the General tab click Selective Startup.
- Click to clear the following check boxes:
- Process Config.sys file
- Process Autoexec.bat file
- Process Winstart.bat file (if available)
- Load startup group items
- Click the Win.ini tab, and then double-click the Windows folder.
- Click to clear the Load= line, click to clear the Run= line, and then click OK.
- Click Yes to restart your computer.

How to Identify Your Hardware Chipset with Device Manager
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System.
- If you use Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, click the Device Manager tab.
If you use Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows XP, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager. - Expand the list next to the Hard Disk controllers or the IDE ATA/ADAPI Controller folder.
- If "VIA Bus Master IDE Controller" is present, your motherboard is based on the VIA chipset.
