XADM: Exchange System Objects Are Displayed with a Generic Windows Logo in Active Directory Users and Computers (325966)

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Active Directory Users and Computers administrative tool, a generic Windows icon is displayed for the Microsoft Exchange System Objects container instead of the expected folder icon. The Microsoft Exchange System Objects elements listed in the right pane are also displayed with a generic Windows logo instead of with the standard object folder icon. Additionally, you cannot open or modify any of the Microsoft Exchange System Objects elements listed in the right pane.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if you use the Active Directory Users and Computers administrative tool on a computer on which the Exchange System Manager tool is not installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install Exchange System Manager on the computer that you are using to run the Active Directory Users and Computers tool.

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Exchange 2000 Server CD-ROM in your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  2. In Windows Explorer, locate Setup.exe on the Exchange 2000 Server CD-ROM, and then double-click Setup.exe.
  3. On the Welcome page of the Exchange 2000 Server Setup Wizard, click Next.
  4. Click I agree, and then click Next.
  5. Type the CD Key in the appropriate box, and then click Next.
  6. On the Component Selection page, click the arrow below Action, and then click Custom.
  7. Locate Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools under Component Name, and then click the arrow to the left (below Action).
  8. Click Install.
  9. Click Next.
  10. On the Component Summary page, verify that Microsoft Exchange System Management Tools is the only item being installed, and then click Next.NOTE: To change your selection of items being installed, click Back to return to the Component Selection page.

  11. Click Finish.
