SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you export your project data to another file format, such as Microsoft Excel or Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) format, the sort order of the data is not maintained. The project data is sorted by the ID field, regardless of the sort criteria that is specified in the project file.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

In Microsoft Project, you can sort tasks or resources by criteria, such as task name, deadline, resource name, and ID. To sort a view, follow these steps:
  1. Start Microsoft Project, and then open your project file.
  2. On the Project menu, point to Sort, and then click the sorting option that you want.

    Or, to customize a sort, point to Sort, click Sort by, and then follow these steps:
    1. In the Sort by box, click a field by which to sort the project data, and then click Ascending or Descending to specify the sort order.
    2. To sort by an additional field, click the field in the Then by box, and then click Ascending or Descending to specify the sort order.
  3. Click Sort.
