PRB: IrDA File Transfer Fails from Pocket PC 2002 to Windows 98 Second Edition (325753)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Powered Pocket PC 2002

This article was previously published under Q325753

SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Pocket PC 2002 devices fail to transfer files by Infrared (IR) port to desktop computers that are running Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition. The File Explorer indicates that the IR transfer failed.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use Microsoft ActiveSync. Pocket PC 2002 requires ActiveSync version 3.5 or later. After you establish an ActiveSync connection, use the Remote File Explorer on Windows 98 Second Edition to copy files to and from the Pocket PC 2002 device.

For more information about how to use ActiveSync to copy files, see the "Copying and Moving Files" Online Help topic that is included with ActiveSync.

MORE INFORMATION

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Use the Notes application to create a test file to transfer.
  2. Align IR ports of the device and the desktop computer.
  3. In File Explorer on the device, tap and then hold the file to transfer.
  4. Click Beam File in the resulting shortcut menu.
This behavior only occurs when a file is beamed from the Pocket PC 2002 device to a computer that is running Windows 98 Second Edition. The problem does not occur if the desktop computer is running Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows XP.

Although files fail to beam from the Pocket PC 2002 device to the desktop computer, files can be beamed the other direction. That is, Pocket PC 2002 can receive a file by using IR to connect to a desktop computer that is running Windows 98 Second Edition.

Typically, files are transferred by using an ActiveSync connection. The problem that is described in this article is about an IR connection between the Pocket PC 2002 device and the desktop computer without using ActiveSync.
