SYMPTOMS
If you try to start Windows Messenger by using an account that does not have administrator permissions on the local computer, any of the following symptoms may occur:
CAUSE
Windows Messenger cannot identify the primary messaging service for the current user and does not start.
RESOLUTIONWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk. - Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
- Locate and then click the following key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft - On the Edit menu, click Add Key, and then add the following registry key:
Key name: MessengerService - Open the MessengerService key.
- On the Edit menu, click New, click String Value, and then add the following registry value:
Value name: PrimaryService
Data type: REG_SZ
Value data: .NET Messenger Service - Quit Registry Editor.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
