Access Violation Error Message in Mmc.exe After You Apply Internet Explorer Privacy Update from Q316116 or After You Apply Internet Explorer 6 SP1 (325666)

SYMPTOMS

After you either install the hotfix from Q316116 or apply Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (SP1), the Mmc.exe console may generate an access violation error message. This issue may occur in the following scenario:
  1. View the domain Group Policy MMC.
  2. Open User Configuration, open Windows Settings - Internet Explorer Maintenance, turn on Preference mode, and then click Advanced.
  3. Click either Corporate Settings or Internet Settings.

CAUSE

The Leakeng.dll file that is provided with the hotfix in Q316116 and that is included in Internet Explorer 6 SP1 is trying to a make a function call to Admparse.dll. This call includes an additional parameter that is not supported in the Windows 2000 version of the Admparse.dll file.

RESOLUTION

A supported fix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
