XADM: Contents of the Address Book Are Displayed in Multiple Languages (325525)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q325525

SYMPTOMS

If you open the Address Book and view the available options in the Show Names from the list, you may see a mixture of languages. For example, the phrases "Global Address List" and "Outlook Address Book" are displayed in one language and the individual lists are displayed in another language.

CAUSE

In Exchange 2000 Server, the language in which the phrases "Global Address List" and "Outlook Address Book" are displayed is determined by the version of Outlook that you are using. The language that you select when you install Windows 2000 as the operating system for the first Exchange 2000 Server computer in your organization determines which language that the individual address lists are displayed in.

For example, if you install the English-language version of Exchange 2000 Server, and you have the French (Canada) version of Outlook installed, "Global Address List" and "Outlook Address Book" are displayed in French, and all of the lists are displayed in English.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, use Exchange System Manager to rename the individual address lists so that they are displayed in the correct language. Note that this change affects all clients regardless of what version of Outlook they are using.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
