SYMPTOMS

If you type an IP version 6 address in the Address box in Microsoft Internet Explorer on a computer that supports the IPv6 protocol, you may receive either of the following error messages:
Internet Explorer cannot open the page.
-or-
Invalid syntax error.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Microsoft Internet Explorer cannot parse IPv6 addresses.

The version of Internet Explorer provided with Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP does not support uniform resource locators (URLs) that use the format for literal IPv6 addresses. This format is described in RFC 2732, "Format for Literal IPv6 Addresses in URLs."

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, type the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the Web site in the Address box in Internet Explorer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
