XADM: "Cannot Delete Exchmem" and "Cannot Delete Exsp" Error Messages When You Manually Remove Exchange 2000 Server (325324)

SYMPTOMS

If you manually remove a Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server installation, and then you try to delete the contents of the Program Files\Exchsrvr folder, you may not be able to delete the Exchmem.dll and the Exsp.dll files. You receive the following error messages:
Cannot delete exchmem: Access is denied. The source file may be in use.

-and-

Cannot delete exsp: Access is denied. The source file may be in use.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if the Microsoft Search service is running.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, stop the Microsoft Search service, and then delete the contents of the Program Files\Exchsrvr folder. To stop the Microsoft Search service, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
  3. In the console tree, expand Services and Applications, and then click Services.
  4. In the right pane, locate and right-click Microsoft Search, and then click Stop.
