XADM: Error Message: Setup Failed While Installing Sub-Component Schema Update with Error Code... (325317)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Exchange 2000 Server, you may receive the following error message:
Setup failed while installing sub-component Schema Update with error code 0xc00706ba (please consult the installation logs for a detailed description). You may cancel the installation or try the failed step again.
The Exchange Server Setup Progress.log file may contain entries that indicate Remote Procedure Call (RPC) errors. The Exchange Server Setup Progress.log file is located in the root folder of the boot partition.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the RPC Locator service is not running.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, start the RPC Locator service:
  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
  2. Double-click Services and Applications, and then click Services.
  3. In the right pane, click Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator, and then click Start on the Action menu.

    NOTE: If the Start command on the Action menu is unavailable, right-click the service, click Properties, click Automatic in the Startup type box, click Apply, and then click Start.
  4. Close the Computer Management dialog box.
  5. Install Exchange 2000 Server.
