SYMPTOMS

The Windows Server 2003 family does not include a default configuration of a "public" community in the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent.

CAUSE

Because the existence of a default configuration of a "public" community in the SNMP agent is well known, it is a security risk to users who install the service.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

For corporate deployments, large-scale configuration of the SNMP agent is possible by using a Group Policy. Users who are running Windows Server 2003 and who install SNMP must manually configure the service. Previous SNMP settings are maintained when you upgrade from a previous version of Windows to Windows Server 2003. SNMP is configured in the Computer Management snap-in under Services.
