"Error 25506 system files update could not continue" error message when you try to install Office XP (325077)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Office XP or any stand-alone Office XP programs, you may receive an error message similar to the following when the system files update process begins:
Error 25506 system files update could not continue; your odbc.dll version is 3.60.3.19. Office XP needs odbc.dll version 3.70.8.20.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) version 2.52 or later is not installed on your computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Download and install the latest version of MDAC. To do this, visit the following Microsoft Web page:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/dataaccess.asp

  2. Run the system files update process again.
