OL2000: You Cannot Change Your Password When the You Log On to a Non-Exchange Domain in Outlook 2000 (324977)

SYMPTOMS

You receive a prompt that requests your logon credentials when you start Outlook 2000 if the following conditions are true:
  • You are logged on to a domain that is different from the one that homes the Microsoft Exchange server that you are using.

    -and-
  • You selected None for your Microsoft Outlook profile authentication.
If you click Change Password when you receive the prompt, the Change Password dialog box appears, and the Exchange Server box is populated with the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) of the Global Catalog server (GC) for the non-Exchange domain.

If you click OK to change your password, you receive the following error message:
Your Windows NT password could not be changed. Please check the information and try again.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that you determine are at risk of attack. Evaluate the computer's physical accessibility, network and Internet connectivity, and other factors to determine the degree of risk to the computer. If the computer is sufficiently at risk, we recommend that you apply this hotfix now.

The global version of this fix has the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

After you install this fix, you should see the Netbios name of the computer that is running Exchange instead of the FQDN of the Global Catalog server.

Note You must have Microsoft Office 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP-3) installed to apply this hotfix.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
