PSRV2002 : You Do Not Have the Passwords to Install Microsoft Project Server to Connect to an Existing Project Server Database (324834)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Project Server, you may not be able to proceed after you are prompted to type the logon names and the passwords for MSProjectServerRole and MSProjectRole. This problem may occur in the following way:
  1. You remove Microsoft Project Server.
  2. You try to install Microsoft Project Server so that it uses the existing database.

CAUSE

When you create the database for Microsoft Project Server, the MSProjectServerRole and MSProjectRole accounts are created automatically and the passwords for these accounts are selected at random. Or, if you manually created the accounts, you may not remember the password for the accounts.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Find Passwords in Registry

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and click the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Office\10\MS Project\WebClient Server

  3. In the right pane, find the following entries, and note their respective data:
    • PrjName
    • PrjPassword
    • PSName
    • PSPassword
  4. Quit Registry Editor.
  5. Install Microsoft Project Server by using a custom installation. When you are prompted for logon names and passwords for members of the MSProjectServerRole and MSProjectRole, use the information that you noted in step 3 as follows:
    • PSName in the MSProjectServerRole Logon name box.
    • PSPassword in the MSProjectServerRole Password box.
    • PrjName in the MSProjectRole Logon name box.
    • PrjPassword in the MSProjectRole Password box.
  6. Proceed with the installation.

Method 2: Change Passwords on Accounts

  1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server, and then click Enterprise Manager.
  2. Locate the server, expand the server, and then click the Security\Logins subfolder.
  3. Right-click MSProjectServerRole (or click the equivalent if you created the account manually), and then click Properties.
  4. In the Password box, type a new password, click OK, retype the new password, and then click OK.
  5. Repeat steps 3 through 4 for MSProjectRole (or the equivalent if you created the account manually).

    NOTE: Microsoft recommends that you type different passwords for each account.
  6. On the Console menu, click Exit.
  7. Install Microsoft Project Server by using a custom installation. When you are prompted for logon names and passwords for members of MSProjectServerRole and MSProjectRole, use the new passwords.
  8. Proceed with the installation.

MORE INFORMATION

By default, when you remove Microsoft Project Server, your Microsoft Project Server database is not removed.
