Error message when you try to reply to an encrypted e-mail message (324830)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2002 Service Pack 2 (SP-2)

This article was previously published under Q324830

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook 2002 Service Pack 2 (SP-2), you may not be able to reply to an encrypted e-mail message. Someone can send you an encrypted message, but you cannot reply to the encrypted message. When you click Send to reply to an encrypted e-mail message, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Outlook had problems encrypting this message because the following recipients had missing or invalid certificates, or conflicting or unsupported encryption capabilities.
Outlook cannot retrieve the certificates that are required.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if an external LDAP directory is used to store the certificates and do all address resolution. For replies, Outlook does not search for certificates that are stored in the LDAP directory. Outlook searches for certificates only in the global address list (GAL), in Contacts, and in the personal address book (PAB).

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Office XP Service Pack 2 that contains this hotfix.

To resolve this problem immediately, contact Microsoft Product Support Services to obtain the hotfix. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site:Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a specific update will resolve your problem.
