This article was previously published under Q324830 SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Outlook 2002 Service Pack 2 (SP-2), you may not be able to reply to an encrypted e-mail message. Someone can send you an encrypted message, but you cannot reply to the encrypted message. When you click Send to reply to an encrypted e-mail message, you may receive the following error message: Microsoft Outlook had problems encrypting this message because the following recipients had missing or invalid certificates, or conflicting or unsupported encryption capabilities. Outlook cannot retrieve the certificates that are required. CAUSEThis issue may occur if an external LDAP directory is used to store the certificates and do all address resolution. For replies, Outlook does not search for certificates that are stored in the LDAP directory. Outlook searches for certificates only in the global address list (GAL), in Contacts, and in the personal address book (PAB).
