MORE INFORMATION

To successfully migrate your SBS 4.5-based Exchange Server database to Exchange Server, migrate the database by using a comma-separated value (CSV) file. To do so, follow these steps:
  1. Export the Dir.edb directory file to a CSV file named Dir.csv. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. In the Exchange Administrator program, on the Tools menu, click Directory Export.
    2. Make sure that the correct domain and Exchange Server computer are selected, and then click Export File.
    3. In the File name box, type dir.csv, and then click Open.
    4. Click Export, and note the location where the file was saved.
  2. Install Exchange Server.

Note If you plan to install Exchange Server on the same computer that you used for SBS, back up the Information Store files (Priv.edb and Pub.edb) and the Dir.csv file that you created in step 1. To determine the location of the Information Store files, run the Exchange Server Performance Optimizer, note the locations of the Dir.csv, Priv.edb, and Pub.edb files, and then quit the Exchange Server Performance Optimizer.
  3. Install the latest Exchange Server service pack and any necessary hotfixes.
  4. Stop the Information Store service.
  5. Import the Dir.csv file that you created in step 1 into Exchange Server. To do so, follow these steps:
    1. In the Exchange Administrator program, on the Tools menu, click Directory Import.
    2. Click to select the correct domain and Exchange Server computer, and then click Import File.
    3. Locate the Dir.csv file that you created in Step 1, and then click Open.
  6. Rename the existing Priv.edb and Pub.edb files to Priv.old and Pub.old.
  7. Copy the Priv.edb and Pub.edb files from the SBS computer to the \Exchsrvr\Mdbdata folder on the Exchange Server computer.
  8. Restart the Information Store service and any other Exchange Server services that may be stopped.
