BUG: Access denied in WMP when you try to stream content as a non-administrator (324710)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1
  • Microsoft Windows Media Player 7

This article was previously published under Q324710

SYMPTOMS

When you try to stream files in Windows Media Player 7.0 or 7.1 as a non-administrator on Microsoft Windows 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Access is denied.

CAUSE

Windows Media Player tries to gain Write access to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{203b1eed-db9f-40fb-87bd-1990982017d2}\Plugins in the context of the user who is logged on. However, access is denied because the user is not an administrator. Non-administrators only have Read access to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{203b1eed-db9f-40fb-87bd-1990982017d2}\Plugins.

RESOLUTION

As the administrator, grant Write access for non-adminstrator account users to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{203b1eed-db9f-40fb-87bd-1990982017d2}\Plugins. You can do this manually by using Registry Editor. For large-scale deployment, use a policy or the Regini.exe tool.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION
