SYMPTOMS

When you open a Setup.ini file that you edited, you may notice the following problem. When you save the file (with the same name or a new name), the advanced properties that you added to the .ini file are changed to a value that is not recognized by the Windows Installer. The Property value appears with quotation marks around it and an extra space. For example:

[Options]
ENTERPRISE_IMAGE="TRUE "

If you try to install Microsoft Office XP with the Setup.ini file that was generated, and if you do not remove the extra spaces, you receive the following error message:
Error opening installation log file. Verify that the specified log file location exists and is writable.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do one of the following.
  • Edit the customized Setup.ini in a text editor to remove the quotation marks and the extra space.

    -or-

  • Pass the Properties on the command line if applicable. The command line will be similar to the following:
    \\server\share\admin_install_point\setup.exe NOUSERNAME=True ENTERPRISE_IMAGE=True
