SYMPTOMS

When you start your computer, you receive a message that prompts you for a program in which to open the Accfil80.ode file. This behavior occurs after you upgrade from Microsoft Office 97 to Office XP or to Office 2000.

CAUSE

Your computer is looking for a file that is used by Office 97. Office XP and Office 2000 do not use this file and do not recognize the file name extension.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the file and remove any shortcuts to it. To do this, use the following two-part procedure.

Part 1 - Rename Accfil80.ode

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, and then click Search.
  2. Click All files and folders.
  3. In the All or part of the file name box, type Accfil80.ode.
  4. In the Look in list, click Local Hard Drives.
  5. Click Search.
  6. When the search is complete, right-click Accfil80.ode, and then click Rename.
  7. Rename the file as Accfil80.old, and then press ENTER.

Part 2 - Remove the Shortcuts

Use one of the following methods, as appropriate to your operating system.

Method 1 - Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or Microsoft Windows 98

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
  3. Click the Startup tab.
  4. In the Startup Item column, click to clear the Microsoft Office check box, and then click OK.

Method 2 - Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows NT, or Microsoft Windows 95

  • Click Start, point to Programs, point to the Startup folder, right-click Microsoft Office, and then click Delete.
