PRB: Deleted Items Folder Emptied but Server Is Not Synchronized (324580)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows CE for Pocket PC 2002

This article was previously published under Q324580

SYMPTOMS

When you use an Internet Message Access Protocol 4 (IMAP4) or Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) service, and the Pocket PC Inbox folder Deleted Items is emptied of messages, the corresponding messages are not deleted from the server even if the Inbox is currently connected to the server.

CAUSE

Pocket PC 2002 sends the delete message command to POP3 and IMAP4 servers only when it connects, not when Pocket PC connects or disconnects.

RESOLUTION

After you empty the Deleted Items folder, if you want the same messages to be deleted from the server, tap Connect on the Tools menu. If you are already connected, tap Disconnect, and then tap Connect. Alternatively, you can use the Send/Receive symbol.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

The Deleted Items folder may be emptied manually or automatically depending on the Inbox option settings. However, emptying the folder may not delete the messages on the mail server. The messages on the server are deleted during the next server connection.

Steps to Reproduce the Behavior

  1. Set the Inbox Empty Deleted Items option to Manually.
  2. Receive a message from the mail server. Keep the device connected.
  3. Move a received message to the Deleted Items folder by deleting it.
  4. On the Tools menu, tap Empty Deleted Items.
  5. Use an e-mail client on a PC or other device to note that the message has not been removed from the mail server.
  6. On the Tools menu, click Disconnect.
  7. On the Tools menu, click Connect. Use the mail client on another device to see that the message has been deleted from the server.
