5004 error messages are logged when you open MAPI programs (324528)

SYMPTOMS

When you run Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5, the following error message or a similar error message may be logged:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: MSExchangeSA
Event Category: General
Event ID: 5004
Description:
Generation of the offline Address Book is complete. Result: The MAPI call failed. MAPI or an unspecified service provider. ID no: 80004005-0000-00000000
You may also receive other MAPI-related errors. After this occurs you cannot run the Admin program on the server, although you can run the Admin program remotely. You also cannot run Exmerge on the server, and offline Address Book (OAB) generation fails. Antivirus software that uses MAPI may also be affected.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the MAPI Global Heap has been used up.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Exchange Server 5.5 service pack that contains this hotfix.
