SYMPTOMS

A digital audio interface PC card may not play audio files.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a bug in the Pcmcia.sys driver.

The problem is that the PCMCIA bus driver does not correctly interpret the TPCC_RMSK field of the CISTPL_CONFIG tuple. This may cause a configuration problem of a PC card in the following scenario:
  • A PC card may only implement the Configuration Option Register (COR), and the card correctly sets the TPCC_RMSK field to 1, which indicates that the PC card is implementing only the COR.
  • The PCMCIA bus driver, however, does not recognize this value and writes both the COR and the next register, which is the Configuration Status Register (CSR).
  • The PC card does not look at the offset (it is not required to), so the second write by the bus driver overwrites the COR, which causes incorrect configuration of the PC card.
The result is that the audio files do not play.
