Pocket PC: Attachments Lost When You Remove and Replace the Storage Card (324400)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Powered Pocket PC 2002

This article was previously published under Q324400

SYMPTOMS

After you remove the storage card, message attachments are lost. Even when you put the card back in, some attachments open a blank template.

Additionally, you see a folder with the name of the storage card and the storage card is renamed. For example, a folder named SD Storage Card is added to the storage card, and the storage card is named SD Storage Card 1.

This behavior occurs only when all the following conditions are met:
  • The storage card is not named Storage Card (for example, it may be named MMC Card or SD Storage Card).
  • The Inbox option for storing message attachments is configured to store attachments on the storage card.
  • The storage card is not inserted when the Inbox is started. The Inbox is started only after a reset or after you manually close the Inbox.
  • The Pocket PC does not have a built-in (internal) flash store.

CAUSE

Pocket PC assumes that all storage cards are named Storage Card, but some devices have a different name, such as MMC Card or SD Storage Card. In this case, if the Inbox is started while the card is out, a folder is created on the device with the same name as the storage card. When the storage card is then reinserted, the storage card is renamed. Attachments that are saved before the card is removed, while the card is out, and after the card is reinserted are stored in different locations. However, the Inbox only looks in one location for the attachments, which causes the problem.

WORKAROUND

Follow these steps to manually copy the attachments from all sources to a single location:
  1. Tap Start, then tap Inbox.
  2. On the Tools menu, tap Options.
  3. On the Message tab, click to clear Store attachments on storage card.
  4. Tap OK. The Inbox now uses attachments in the \Windows\messaging\attachments folder.
  5. With File Explorer, copy the individual attachment files to the \Windows\messaging\attachments folder. Copy them from the folder that is named after the storage card and from the renamed storage card. If you are prompted to overwrite files, select the largest file.
  6. Rename the storage card folder that was created in RAM to Old Attachments.
  7. Remove and then reinsert the storage card. This fixes the storage card name.
  8. Open the Inbox, and verify that all attachments in messages open correctly.
  9. Delete the \Inbox.mst folder from the storage card.
  10. Delete the Old Attachments folder. After you follow these steps, you can use the storage card for attachments again.

MORE INFORMATION

The storage card is named by the device manufacturer. Most cards are named Storage Card, but some devices may have a custom name for storage cards (for example, the Compact Flash card, the Secure Digital card, or the Multimedia card).
