ERROR SIGNATURE

This article addresses a problem that can have the following error signature:

SYMPTOMS

If you click the number of a list item that uses the LISTNUM field for numbering, and you then click Bullets and Numbering on the Format menu (or right-click the selected number, and then click Bullets and Numbering on the shortcut menu), you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Word 2002 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature similar to the error listed at the beginning of this article.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the list of items was previously formatted with a list style (for example, the List Bullet style).

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. In the error message dialog box, make sure that the Recover my work and restart Microsoft Word check box is selected, and then click Don't Send.
  2. In the recovered document, select the text of the document that you want to save, and then click Copy on the Edit menu.
  3. In a new blank Word document, click Paste.
  4. Save the new document, close the original document that is causing the error, and then delete the original document that is causing the error.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
