BUG: SQL Server Virtual Server Setup Fails and You Receive an Error Message (324305)

SYMPTOMS

Setup for a Microsoft SQL Server 2000 virtual server may fail and you receive the following error message:

Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted.

This problem occurs because:

There is already one virtual SQL Server 2000 named instance that is running on the same node on which you are running Setup for the second virtual SQL Server 2000 named instance.

-And-
Both virtual SQL Server 2000 named instances are listening on the same TCP/IP port, even if they have different virtual IP addresses.

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods:

Take the first virtual SQL Server 2000 named instance offline before you run Setup for the second virtual SQL Server 2000 named instance.

-Or-
Use different TCP/IP ports for the two virtual SQL Server 2000 named instances. Use Server Network Utility to change the port setting after Setup completes successfully.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
