DMO is interface for codecs in Windows Media Player 7, 7.1 and 8. VCM is an older interface that is used in older NetShow players and can also work in Windows Media Player 6.4. DirectShow is used for codecs in Windows Media Player 6.4.

These codecs are installed automatically as a part of Windows Media Player for Microsoft Windows XP and Windows Media Player 7.1. Microsoft recommends that users who are running Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), or Microsoft Windows 2000 download Windows Media Player 7.1 to play back content that was created with the latest Windows Media audio and video codecs.

For a silent installation, administrators can use the "/q:a" and "/r:n" parameters.
