"Exception 0E" Error Message When You Try to Connect to a DFS Link Target (324212)

This article was previously published under Q324212 SYMPTOMS When you try to connect to a Distributed File System (DFS)
link target from a DFS root, you may receive the following error message.

An exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C02D971F in VxD VREDIR(06)
+ 0000E7AB. The current application will be terminated.
* Press and key to attempt to continue.
* Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart your computer. You will
lose any unsaved information in all applications.
Press any key to continue
NOTE: You receive a similar error message when you try to map a drive
to a DFS root. CAUSE This problem may occur if a link target that was originally
a share is converted to a DFS root after a link to the target is created in a
parent DFS root. RESOLUTION To work around this issue, delete and then re-create a DFS
link after a link target is converted from a share to a DFS root. Make sure
that users log off and then log back on to the client computers. STATUSMicrosoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
