OL2000: Attachment Becomes Embedded Inline Object When You Copy an Attachment from an RTF Message to an HTML Message (324206)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

This article was previously published under Q324206

SYMPTOMS

When you copy an attachment from a Rich Text Format (RTF) message to a Microsoft WordMail (HTML) message, Outlook 2000 may add the attachment to the message as an inline embedded object instead of an attachment object. The recipient of the message may not be able to open the attachment.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you either copy and paste or drag an attachment to a WordMail (HTML) message, because WordMail automatically inserts the item as an embedded OLE object instead of as an attachment.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use the following procedure to paste the attachment to the WordMail message as an attachment object:

  1. Open the RTF message, and then select the attachment that you want to copy.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  3. Open the WordMail message.
  4. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
  5. Click Files, and then click OK.
This procedure adds the attachment to the Attach box. When you send the message, the recipients can open the attachment.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Outlook 2000.

This problem was corrected in Microsoft Outlook 2002.
