OAER: Word Quits When You Restore a Window or Switch Between Windows (324202)

ERROR SIGNATURE

This article addresses a problem in which Word unexpectedly quits (crashes), which can have the following error signature:
   App Name      App Version   Module Name   Module Version   Offset
   -------------------------------------------------------------------

   Winword.exe   10.0.2627.0   Winword.exe   10.0.2627.0      00004ca4
		

SYMPTOMS

When you try to make a Word window active, you may receive the following error message:
Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature similar to the error listed at the beginning of this article.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if one of the following conditions is true:
  • You try to make a Word window active by restoring Word from a minimized condition.
  • You try to make a Word window active by switching between Word windows.
  • You try to make a Word window active by switching from a different program to Word.
After you close the error message, Word restarts and tries to recover the documents that were open.

WORKAROUND

Use the Office Product Updates Web site to detect the required updates that you must install on your computer.



You can also remove Handwriting Recognition as a text service if it is installed. To do this, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Text Services.
  3. Under Installed services, click Handwriting Recognition under the language that you want this feature removed from, click Remove, and then click OK.
Handwriting Recognition is removed from the language that you specified.

If you remove Handwriting Recognition as a text service, it is not removed from your computer's hard disk. To remove Handwriting Recognition from your hard disk, follow these steps.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your product documentation to complete these steps.
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the installed programs list, click Microsoft Office XP, and then click Add/Remove.
  4. Click Add or Remove Features, and then click Next.
  5. In the Features to install list, expand Office Shared Features.
  6. Expand Alternative User Input.
  7. Click Handwriting, and then click Not Available on the shortcut menu.
  8. Click Update to remove handwriting components.

The Office Error Reporting dialog box appears when an error occurs that results in a fatal event in the program.
