SYMPTOMS

The Spooler service may stop responding (hang) when an access violation occurs, and the following event may be logged:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7031
User: N/A
Computer: print server name
Description: The Print Spooler service terminated unexpectedly.
The Dr. Watson log may show that the access violation occurred in the Spoolsv.exe tool in gdi32!IcmInitIcmInfo.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if a print job that contains an older version 3 DEVMODE structure that does not contain ICM information is submitted. When the spooler tries to reference this data, it causes the access violation.
