Access Violation in Spoolsv.exe GDI32!IcmInitIcmInfo in Windows 2000 (324183)

SYMPTOMS

The Spooler service may stop responding (hang) when an access violation occurs, and the following event may be logged:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7031
User: N/A
Computer: print server name
Description: The Print Spooler service terminated unexpectedly.

The Dr. Watson log may show that the access violation occurred in the Spoolsv.exe tool in gdi32!IcmInitIcmInfo.

RESOLUTION

Service Pack Information

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. After you apply this hotfix, the DEVMODE structure is checked before ICM data can be used. If a DEVMODE that is not valid is detected, the following error may be logged by the spooler:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Print
Event Category: None
Event ID: 45
User: user name
Computer: print server name
Description: Document failed to print due to GDI/Driver error in rendering.

This print job may not print successfully, but it no longer hangs the Spooler service.
