SUMMARY

If you use Client for NFS, a component of Windows Services for UNIX 3.0, you can transfer files from your existing UNIX server to your Windows-based server more easily. After you use Network File System (NFS) to export the file system or folder that you want to transfer from the UNIX server, you can easily move whole folder trees in a single step in the same way you can when the files are located on a Windows-based server.

Transferring Files from UNIX to Windows by Using Client for NFS

To transfer files from UNIX to Windows by using Client for NFS, use the exportfs command to make the files available from the UNIX server, and then use Windows Explorer to move the files to your Windows-based server.

To transfer files from UNIX to Windows:
  1. Log on to the UNIX server by using root permissions.
  2. Run the following command to export the folder tree or file system in which the files that you want to migrate are located:

    exportfs -v full_folder_path

    NOTE: Run the man exportfs command to display the parameters that you can use when you export folders from your UNIX server.

    NOTE: You cannot export a folder that is either a parent folder or a child folder of the folder that is currently exported and that resides on the same file system.
  3. Make the files readable for all users
  4. Log on to the target Windows-based computer that is running Client for NFS.
  5. Start Windows Explorer
  6. Expand Entire Network, expand NFS Network, and then expand Default LAN.
  7. Click the UNIX server from which you want to transfer files.
  8. Right-click the folder that you exported, and then click Copy (or press CTRL+C).
  9. Right-click the target folder on your Windows-based computer, and then click Paste (or press CTRL+V).

Troubleshooting

  • If your UNIX server is not running PCNFSD and you are not using Network Information Service (NIS) for authentication, you must install the Windows Services for UNIX Server for PCNFS component. Please view the PCNFS KB Article in the REFERENCES section.
  • Microsoft recommends that you install at least one User Name Mapping service on your network to map UNIX and Windows user names to each other. Please view the User Name Mapping KB Article in the REFERENCES section.
