Windows 2000 Stops Responding After a Surprise Removal of a USB OHCI Controller (323937)

SYMPTOMS

When you hot unplug an OHCI USB controller to which one or more USB-based devices are connected, you may receive an error message on a blue screen, and your computer may stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the Openhci.sys host controller driver tries to use invalid memory locations in its surprise remove (IRP_MN_SURPRISE_REMOVE) code path.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, eject the controller by using the Hotplug tool on the taskbar. Note that if you hot plug-in the controller device again, it may not be redetected by the system. If this occurs, restart your computer.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
This problem was corrected in Microsoft Windows XP.
