IntelliPoint: Cannot Install IntelliPoint 4.01 (323922)

Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you

SYMPTOMS After you download IntelliPoint 4.01, you may not be able
to install the software. When you try to install the software, the hourglass
(busy pointer) may appear for a moment and then return to normal.
CAUSE This problem may occur if any of the following conditions
is true:
- A previously installed version of IntelliPoint is
corrupted.
- A previously installed version of IntelliPoint was
incorrectly installed.
- The downloaded copy of IntelliPoint 4.01 is
corrupted.
RESOLUTION To resolve this problem, try Method 1 first, if Method 1
does not resolve the issue, use the Method 2. NOTE: Because there are several versions of Microsoft Windows, the
following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, see your
product documentation to complete these steps. Method 1: Remove IntelliPoint and Then Reinstall- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
- Click Microsoft IntelliPoint, and then click Remove.
NOTE: This is the previously installed version of
IntelliPoint. - Restart your computer.
- Try to install IntelliPoint 4.01.
If this does not resolve the problem, continue with Method 2. Method 2: Install IntelliPoint by Using a Clean Boot Follow the steps in this four-part procedure to completely remove
the previously installed version of IntelliPoint and then install IntelliPoint
4.01. Part 1 - Completely Remove IntelliPoint- Right-click Start, and then click Explore.
- In the Address box, type the following and then press ENTER
drive:\Program Files\Microsoft Hardware where drive is the drive on which
IntelliPoint is installed. - Right-click Mouse, and then click Delete.
NOTE: If any Uninstall.isu files appear at this
location, delete them also. - In the Address box, type the following, and then press ENTER where drive is the drive on which the Program Files folder is located.
- Right-click the Microsoft IntelliPoint folder, and then click Delete.
NOTE: This folder contains the previously installed version of
IntelliPoint. - In the Address box, type the following and then press ENTER where drive is the drive on which
Windows is installed.
- On the Edit menu, click Select All.
- On the File menu, click Delete.
- On the File menu, click Close.
Part 2 - Delete the Registry KeysWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk. - Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
- Locate and then expand the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft - Right-click IntelliPoint, and then click Delete.
- Locate and then expand the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall - Right-click {ABEA...etc}, and then click Delete.
NOTE: This key may not exist on your computer.
Part 3 - Perform a Clean Boot Use a clean boot to restart your computer. A clean boot is a way to create a clean
environment. When you start your computer with a clean boot, Microsoft Windows
starts and loads only basic devices and services. For information about how to
use a clean boot, see the "More Information" section later in this article.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
- Click Selective startup, and then click to
clear all check boxes.
- Click Apply, and then click OK.
- Restart your computer.
Part 4 - Install IntelliPoint 4.01 and Then Restart Your Computer in Normal Mode- Locate the IntelliPoint 4.01 setup files.
- Double-click Setup.exe.
- When IntelliPoint 4.01 installation is completed, click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type msconfig, and then click OK.
- Click Normal startup - load all device drivers and
software, click Apply, and then click OK.
- Restart your computer.
