IntelliMouse: Error Message: Windows Was Unable to Locate a Driver for This Device (323921)

This article was previously published under Q323921 SYMPTOMS If you try to connect your Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical
pointing device to the USB port on a Microsoft Windows 98-based computer, you
may receive an error message similar to the following:
Windows was unable to locate a driver for this device. CAUSE This error may occur when the Hidclass.sys file is not
found on the Windows 98 CD-ROM. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, verify that the Hidclass.sys file is
located on the hard disk, and then use one of the following methods. Verify That the Hidclass.sys File is in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers Folder To verify that the file is located in the
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type Hidclass.sys.
- In the Look in box, click My Computer, and then click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, verify that the Hidclass.sys file is located in the following folder:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
If the Hidclass.sys file is missing from the
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers folder, extract a new copy of that file from the
Windows 98 CD-ROM, and then install the file in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
folder. To do this, use method 1. If you do not have the Windows 98
CD-ROM, use method 2. Method 1: Reinstall Missing Files from CD-ROM- Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive. Press
and hold down the SHIFT key as you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Windows Setup
from starting automatically.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type sfc, and then click OK.
- Click Extract one file from installation
disk.
- In the Specify the system file you would like to
restore box, type the name of the missing file, and then click Start.
- In the Restore from box, type drive:\Win98, where drive is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive.
- In the Save file in box, type
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers, and then click OK.
- Click OK, and then click OK again.
- When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
- Connect your IntelliMouse pointing device to the USB port
on your computer.
Method 2: Copy Files from the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs Folder- Start Windows Explorer.
- Locate the following folder:
- Right-click the Cabs folder, and then click Copy.
- Locate the following folder:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
- Right-click the Drivers folder, and then click Paste.
- Connect your IntelliMouse pointing device to the USB port
on your computer.
