This article was previously published under Q323828

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install a Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 server role such as a Server Locator Point (SLP), a Client Access Point (CAP), or a Management Point (MP) on a domain controller that resides in a different Active Directory domain than the SMS 2003 site server, the SMS 2003 Site Component Manager cannot install the remote server role.

The Sitecomp.log file that is located in the \SMS\Logs folder on the SMS 2003 site server may contain the following error message:
Could not install service SMS_SERVER_BOOTSTRAP_ServerName. The operating system reported error 1057: The account name is invalid or does not exist, or the password is invalid for the account name specified.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if you installed SMS 2003 by using Standard security.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, reconfigure your SMS 2003 site to use Advanced security. If you do this, the SMS 2003 Site Component Manager can install server roles on domain controllers that reside in different Active Directory domains.
