Add/Remove Programs tool does not display Systems Management Server 2003 software distribution packages in Windows 2000 (323826)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Advanced client software on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, SMS 2003 software distribution packages may not appear in the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel. The All Categories list under Add New Programs offers no packages to select from. Instead, the list displays a "No programs are available on the network" message.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Windows 2000-based computer has not been updated to Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2) or later. SMS 2003 uses the Windows 2000 Appwiz.cpl file for software distribution to add software packages to the Add/Remove Programs list. In this case, the earlier version of the Appwiz.cpl file cannot add the software package to the All Categories list.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, upgrade the computer to Windows 2000 SP2 or later, or copy the Appwiz.cpl file that is included with Windows 2000 SP2 to the %WINDIR%\System32 folder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
