The Systems Management Server 2003 Distribution Manager feature does not use manually created shares for distribution points (323795)

This article was previously published under Q323795 SYMPTOMSYou can use Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 to automatically create a shared folder that is a distribution point for a package. When you do this, SMS 2003 may create a distribution point folder on a different NTFS file system volume on the same computer. However, the distribution point folder that SMS 2003 creates is not shared, even though it has the same share name as the shared folder that you manually created.CAUSEThis behavior occurs when you manually create a shared folder before
you specify a distribution point folder for a package. Therefore, when you specify a source directory in the Data Source tab in the Package Properties dialog box, SMS Distribution Manager creates the distribution point folder on the largest volume. If a shared folder with the same share name already exists on that volume, SMS Distribution Manager automatically creates the distribution point folder on the next available volume. However, the distribution point folder is not shared because a shared folder that has the same name already exists.WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, delete the shared folder that you manually created. Let the SMS Distribution Manager automatically create the shared folder. If you must change the path for the shared folder, you must use a different share name.STATUS
