SYMPTOMS

When you try to view or manage services on a remote Microsoft Windows XP-based computer by using the Services snap-in (Services.msc), you may receive the following error message:
Unable to open service control manager database on \\computer.
Error 1722: The RPC server is unavailable.

CAUSE

This error message may occur if the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks component is not turned on on the remote computer.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, turn on the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks component on the remote computer.

The File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks component must be turned on for many remote-management functions to work. For example, the following commands do not work if the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks component is not turned on. sc.exe \\computer query
[SC] OpenSCManager FAILED 1722:
The RPC server is unavailable.
at.exe \\computer
The network path was not found.
schtasks.exe /query /s \\computer
ERROR: The network path was not found.
