ISA Server Services Are Unavailable for an Array Partner (323774)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000

This article was previously published under Q323774

SYMPTOMS

If you start the Internet Security and Acceleration (ISA) Server Management tool on one member of your Enterprise ISA Server array, click Monitoring, and then switch to Services view, the status for services may show "Unavailable" for other servers in the array.

CAUSE

This behavior may occur if you turn off the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks feature on individual members of the array. This behavior is actually caused by limitations in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Control functions that ISA Server calls. These functions rely on RPC over named pipes, which requires the Server service to be available.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, turn on the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks feature, or administer the services from each node individually.

MORE INFORMATION

This is a limitation of the of the Service Control functions as implemented by Windows 2000.

This behavior does not affect the operation of the ISA Server array. This behavior only limits your ability to centrally manage and view the status of services on all array members.
