  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

This article was previously published under Q323629

SUMMARY

In a messaging environment that uses Exchange 2000 and Microsoft Windows 2000, you can have users who have the same logon names if the user accounts exist in different organizational units.

MORE INFORMATION

Such an environment requires the following criteria:
  • The pre-Windows 2000 user logon name must be different for each user.
  • To avoid ambiguity, the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) and user name must be used for logon, for example:

account name@[domain name | UPN suffix]

If this criteria is not met, the operating system cannot correctly distinguish between multiple users with the same logon name.

An Exchange 2000 e-mail client must also meet the same logon criteria, account name@[domain name | UPN suffix], to successfully be authenticated by the mail server.
