Status message is missing on large distributions (323627)

SYMPTOMS

When you use the software distribution feature of Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) to distribute software, some targeted client computers may not report the status correctly in the Administrator console. The percentage of clients that are missing their status message in the Administrator console increases as the number of clients that are running a scheduled advertisement increases or as the number of clients for each client access point (CAP) increases. When you view the clients manually, you notice that the advertisement ran successfully but that the status message was not propagated to the Administrator console. When this problem occurs, the Cqmgr32.log file on a client computer that is missing the status message contains entries similar to the following text:

--Validating Item 'Item 61949725'
--Servicing Item 'Item 61949725'
--Inserted Item[Item 61949725] into list
--Trying to copy Item[Item 61949725], copy try no. 1
--Item[Item 61949725] NOT copied, already exists, set status to Remove
--Skipping Item 'Item 61949725', it is marked for deletion
--Removing Item 'Item 61949725'

CAUSE

The Cqmgr32.log file corresponds to Copy Queue Manager (CQMGR) on the client computer. The CQMGR component is the client component that is responsible for copying files from the client to the appropriate Inbox on an available CAP. During typical processing, CQMGR creates a pseudo-random file name and then tries to copy the file to the Inbox. If the file name is already in use, this operation does not succeed. When the copy process does not succeed because of a file name collision, the CQMGR component creates a new random file name and retries the operation up to 50 times.

The hotfix for this article makes the following changes to the CQMGR behavior:
  • It replaces the algorithm that is used to generate the pseudo-random file name with an updated algorithm that is less likely to produce the same file names from multiple clients.
  • It changes the maximum retries to 10.
  • It changes the behavior so that when a copy operation is not successful, the item is not deleted permanently. This item is retried during the next copy cycle.
This problem can also occur with other files that the client components send to the CAP by using the CQMGR component. However, you may notice this problem most frequently with status messages because there are so many of them.
