PRB: Audio Does Not Work After You Use "Upgrade Driver" Option in Device Manager (323500)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
- Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
This article was previously published under Q323500 SYMPTOMS
After you use the Upgrade Driver option in Device Manager to replace the current audio driver, audio functionality is no longer available on the system until you restart the computer. This behavior is unique to audio drivers. If you upgrade non-audio drivers by using the Upgrade Driver option, this behavior does not occur.
CAUSE
This behavior occurs because a portion of the audio driver stack continues to use information that references the original audio driver. This prevents proper interaction between those components and the new audio driver.
RESOLUTION
After you perform the driver upgrade, restart the computer. This forces the audio driver stack to reinitialize itself.
