How To Install Print Services for Macintosh and Print Services for UNIX in Windows Server 2003 (323421)

SUMMARY

This step-by-step article describes how to set up print services on a Windows Server 2003-based computer. To permit users of client computers that are running non-Microsoft operating systems to print, additional services must be installed on the print server. These additional print services include the following:

• Print Services for Macintosh
• Print Services for UNIX

How to Install Print Services

1. Log on as administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
2. Insert the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM into the computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. Press and hold down SHIFT as you insert the disc to prevent it from starting automatically.
3. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add or Remove Programs.
4. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.
5. In the Components list, click Other Network File and Print Services (but do not select or clear the check box), and then click Details.
6. In the Subcomponents of Other Network File and Print Services list, click to select one or more of the following check boxes, as appropriate to the print services that you want to install:
   • Print Services for Macintosh: This option permits Macintosh users to send print jobs to a print spooler on the server that is running Windows Server 2003.
     
     If you have not already installed the AppleTalk protocol, it is installed automatically when you install Print Services for Macintosh.
   • Print Services for UNIX: This option permits UNIX clients to print to any printer that is available to the print server.
     
     When you install Print Services for UNIX, this automatically installs the LPR port and the TCP/IP Print Server service.
7. Click OK, and then click Next.
8. Click Finish.

Notes About Microsoft Print Services for UNIX

In UNIX, a program on one computer can use the line printer remote (LPR) service to send a document to a print spooler service on another computer. The receiving service is typically called a line printer daemon (LPD).

Print Services for UNIX provides both LPR and LPD services, which act independently on a Windows Server 2003-based print server.

• The Line Printer Daemon Service (LPDSVC) on the print server receives documents from native LPR utilities that are running on UNIX client computers.
• The LPR print monitor (Lprmon) on the print server sends print jobs to native LPD processes on UNIX computers that printers are attached to.
