Computer stops responding when you debug programs in the Japanese-language version of Windows XP (323413)

SYMPTOMS

When you initiate a debug operation in one program from another program in the Japanese-language version of Microsoft Windows XP, the computer may stop responding.

Note This issue occurs less frequently when you prevent Ctfmon.exe from running in the background.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the Japanese Input Method Editor (IME) initialization code incorrectly locks a mutex. When the mutex is locked, it blocks a thread that the debug program must use to work correctly.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing.
