FIX: SAK Server Managers May Be Able to Gain Administrators Group Access (323405)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Server Appliance Kit (SAK), version 2.0
This article was previously published under Q323405 SYMPTOMS
Members of the Server Managers group can run programs with elevated privileges. Therefore, members of the Server Managers group must be treated as members of the Administrators group.
CAUSE
There are two known ways that Server Managers can run programs under the System account:
- Create an Active Server Pages (ASP) page that sets the Web site to run in low protection, and then restart the Web site. Code that is placed in the Session_OnEnd method or the Application_OnEnd method runs under the System account.
- Create an ASP page that sets the Web site to run in low protection, and then restart the Web site. Then, create a Component Object Model (COM) object that calls the RevertToSelf function.
