Remote Storage Migration Job Does Not Work After Experiencing an End-of-Media Error (323377)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
- Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
This article was previously published under Q323377 SYMPTOMS Remote Storage may log the following event messages when it
tries to copy files to tape during a migration job:
Event ID:5001 Source: Remote Storage Description: Remote Storage
encountered an error while accessing the device. Physical end of the media has
been reached. (0x810b0013) Check the System Log for more information.
Event ID:5009 Source: Remote Storage Description: The file
Volume_name:\path\to\file\file_name cannot be copied
to Remote Storage media. Physical end of the media has been reached.
(0x810b0013)
Event ID: 6012 Source:Remote Storage
Description: Data Transfer for Remote Storage Copy Files
Drive_letter on Server_name\NTFS\drive_letter: has failed:
succeeded on xx files (xxxxxxxx bytes), skipped 0 files (0 bytes), and failed
on X files (xxxxxxxx bytes) in hh:mm:ss for a throughput of 0 files/sec
(xxxxxxx bytes/sec). When this issue occurs, any remaining files
that were supposed to be copied to remote storage during the job are left on
the volume. This means that the free space that you want will not be created
until the next Manage or Copy operation completes successfully. These
events may also occur if the Remote Storage database itself was being copied as
part of a typical migration when the end of the media was reached:
Event ID: 5999 Source:Remote Storage
Description: Remote Storage encountered an unknown error while accessing the
device. Physical end of tape encountered. (0x80070469) Check the System Log for
more information
Event ID: 2017 Source:Remote Storage
Description: A backup copy of one or more Remote Storage database file(s)
cannot be made. Physical end of the media has been reached. (0x810b0013) The
problem should be corrected to ensure a complete backup of all Remote Storage
database files are stored on Remote Storage media.
CAUSE Remote Storage is supposed to compensate for the small
differences in tape capacities by keeping a five percent tolerance zone of free
space at the end of the tape. Under certain circumstances, Remote Storage may
miscalculate how full the media is. This may cause a physical End Of Media to
be reached during a Copy Files or Manage operation. When this occurs, Remote
Storage stops the current job, which leaves files that were supposed to be
migrated on the volume. RESOLUTION As a workaround, you can manually start another "Remote
Storage copy files" or "Remote Storage free disk space" job from Scheduled
Tasks. Before you start, make sure that
the tape device driver and the firmware are updated to the latest versions. STATUSMicrosoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
