FIX: Subquery That Returns One Row May Cause CPU Spin and Excessive Optimizer Memory Usage (323213)

This article was previously published under Q323213 BUG #: 358052 (SHILOH_BUGS) SYMPTOMS A query that includes a subquery that will return one row
at most, may:
- Experience a CPU spin.
-and-
- Consume excessive optimizer memory during query
compilation.
Because the loop occurs during query optimization, this problem
occurs even if the query is run after execution of this statement:
SET SHOWPLAN_TEXT ON Eventually, the query may fail with this 701 error: Server: Msg 701, Level 17, State 1, Line 1 There is insufficient
system memory to run this query. RESOLUTION To resolve this problem, obtain the latest
service pack for Microsoft SQL Server 2000. For additional information, click

SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 3. The English version of this fix has
the file attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The
dates and times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC).
When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the
difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
